CSET Summer School

Applications for this years CSET summer school will close on 31 March 2011 so if you are interested please apply now.

The CSET Summer School is an expenses paid residential event for first-year law students and second-year non-law students that gives the opportunity to:
Take part in skills sessions on practical law, commercial awareness, teamwork and how to succeed at applications and interviews.
Work with solicitors from top law firms.
Work on hands-on case studies and debating exercises.
Be inspired by representatives from alternative training contact providers and the self-employed bar.
The 100 place Summer School runs from Monday 11 July until Thursday 14 July and will be held at Queen Mary, University of London. Apply

Labour claims police officers will be forced to retire

More than 2,000 of the country's most experienced police officers could be forced to retire by 2015 as forces try to cut costs, according to Labour.

Although police officers cannot be made redundant, officers with 30 or more years' experience can be made to retire under existing regulations. Read More

The Lawyers with Disabilities Division (LDD) has developed this half day mini-conference aimed at law students and trainee solicitors with disabilities who want to know more about a career as a solicitor and options available.

The programme will consist of two panel sessions addressing a career in local government; commerce & industry; life as a sole practitioner, as well as information on Access to Work; a presentation from Law Works on pro bono work. There will also be a useful session giving advice on declaring a disability

International Women's Day

EU Parliament marked the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day (Tuesday 8 March) with a debate and vote on two resolutions tabled by the Women's Rights Committee: one on gender equality and the other on female poverty. Police pay review calls for end to special payments

An independent review of police pay and conditions in England and Wales has called for the abolition of a series of allowances and special payments.
Tom Winsor's report recommends making savings of £60m a year in overtime.  Mr Winsor says his recommendations will produce overall savings of £485m in three years - and reinvestment in the "most important police jobs" would mean fewer posts would be lost than Acpo forecasts.  Read more

Justice are now inviting applications for their Summer Internship Programme 2011
Summer interns undertake legal research in one of JUSTICE's main areas of policy work: human rights, criminal justice or EU justice and home affairs. For this reason they are seeking applications from law graduates only. This includes people who expect to have completed a law degree or conversion course by the time they start their internship. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate familiarity with relevant UK law and institutions.  More information

What is FLUX?  In a nutshell, teams of six spend 36 hours solving real business problems with help from experts from some of the UK’s most dynamic companies, in an Apprentice meets Dragon’s Den-style competition. FLUX is open to all who would like to challenge themselves and boost their employability skills. More than 60% of the 30,000 students who have taken part over the last 4 years were from non-business related subjects.
